I offer this meme as an illustration of how a conservative movement has used its funding sources to begin destroying our institutions. Conservative individuals, corporations, foundations, and interest groups banded together and spent the last sixty years trying to destroy the foundations of the 1930s New Deal era. Remember, the New Deal policies rebuilt America following the depression of the 1920’s. The middle class boomed until the far right began its very, effective messaging to divide and split that middle class. Once the divisions of that effort began to take hold another step was introduced.
Gerrymandering is an old method of destroying democratic republics. Coordinated efforts produced modern techniques, resulting in whole states being turned to extreme conservatism. In Wisconsin, help is on the way. Here, our institutions finally held the line. After 28 of the last 30 years, our institutional right to free and open elections and a reformed state supreme court said, “Enough is enough.”
